Do You Have a Want For Supersonic Streaming? 5G Is Here, So Get Ready UK

Long-awaited 5G has hit the UK, offering incredible speed for your downloads, gaming, and streaming. 5G is a step-change in performance; with download speeds of 10-50 gigabits per second (Gbps), it is around ten times faster than its 4G predecessor. This speed means you can download an HD movie in a matter of seconds.

Vodafone is already providing 5G, and it is expected that iD will launch its 5G service, for compatible devices, in 2021. iD already has 3G/4G services covering various locations.

5G mobile phone- What Is It?

5G is short for 5th Generation, referring to it being the 5th generation of mobile phone network technology. Similarly, 4G was the 4th generation, 3G the third, and so on. 5G is the latest development of mobile network technology.

Having said that, 5G differs from 4G not merely in terms of speed but also in its operation. 4G signals are transmitted via a network of high-power mobile phone towers, radiating signals across long distances. 5G, instead, uses a higher number of smaller, shorter-range base stations. The 5G network utilizes existing infrastructure scattered across the whole country, such as lamp-poles and rooftops, for mounting its transmitters.

You might be asking yourself why there is a need for totally new infrastructure. Well, it all comes down to how 5G works.

How 5G Works

When your mobile data is transmitted across the internet, it travels using radio frequencies via the mobile network. 4G used frequencies in a range below 6 GHz. 5G, on the other hand, utilizes frequencies between 30-300 GHz. These higher frequencies are referred to as the ‘millimeter waves spectrum,’ and they are essential for 5G to perform as expected.

The issue with these high frequencies is that they have an incredibly short wavelength. Because of their short wavelength, 5G signals can be obstructed by physical objects or even weather conditions such as snow.

So, thousands of transmitters are required to ensure that the signals never have far to travel, therefore minimizing the risk of instruction. Each of these small transmitters requires line-of-sight communication with others to transmit and receive. Due to the vast number of transmitters needed to cover the whole country, 5G’s rollout will take years rather than months.

The benefits of 5G

It might take some time, but 5G is worth the wait. It will provide a faster connection and increased capacity. The benefits to the user include the following:

  • Faster downloading.
  • Faster uploading.
  • Responsive wireless networks.
  • Quicker network response rate.
  • More reliable connection.
  • Increased coverage.
  • Less buffering.
  • Reduced lag for a better gaming experience.
  • Stronger signals.
  • More consistent signal strength.

Some of the perceived benefits of 5G are in areas such as enhanced drones, remote surgery, self-driving cars, haptic feedback, virtual and augmented reality.

In the longer-term, 5G could bring all of these benefits to every corner of the earth. Operators and 5G product manufacturers are only scratching the surface of this technology’s capabilities.

How fast 5G really is?

In.short, 5G is fast, really fast! In a test environment, 5G reached download speeds of one terabit per second (1Tbps). In reality, speeds are likely to be around 10-50 Gbps.

These speeds compare to 4G’s theoretical download rate of around 300Mps. In reality, most people download at around 20Mbps, which means that 5G can be up to 1,000 times faster than its predecessor. With 5G, you can download an HD movie in seconds.

Of course, your actual download speed will depend upon your provider and your device. Regardless, it’s going to be considerably quicker.
